ORIGIN
OF VOLLEYBALL
While
a game which somewhat resembled volleyball
was being played in England as far back
as 1591, it was only in 1895 that the American
William G. Morgan developed a game, which
was to be the predecessor of our present-day
volleyball. At the time, Morgan dubbed the
game "Mintonette". "Mintonette" was created for business men as a game,
that involved less physical contact, at
the chapter of the YMCA where he worked
at in Holyoke, Massachusetts. During one
of the demonstration games of the sport,
one of the spectators commented the game
was more about volleying, and the game name
was changed to Volleyball.
Spread by the U.S. troops and the YMCA,
this sport which had meanwhile gained some
momentum, reached the rest of the world. |
